The Istituto Nazionale di Ricerca Metrologica (INRIM) is a public scientific research body which carries out and promotes research in metrology and develops the most advanced measurement standards and methods and related technologies, fulfilling the functions of a primary metrological institute. INRIM creates and maintains the national standards for units of measurement. Among its activities, the Time&Frequency group carries on research related to atomic frequency standards, such as the development of ultra-stable frequency references in the optical domain, fiber frequency transfer, development of techniques for detection and manipulation of ultra-cold gases, and tests of fundamental physics. A cavity-enhanced optical lattice clock based on strontium atoms is currently under development, experimenting with advanced cooling, trapping and frequency stabilization techniques. It aims at merging quantum technologies developed in the so-called cavity quantum electrodynamics (cavity QED) community with state-of-the-art optical lattice clock technology. It also pursues theoretical investigations of light-matter interactions in the full quantum regime, with particular attention to effects related to optical lattice clocks, such as ultracold collisions and entanglement (spin-squeezing) generation in collective atomic states.
INRIM possesses state-of-the-art optics laboratories, and electronic and mechanical workshops, available to the beneficiary. The lab hosts one strontium optical lattice clock with 2×10-14 @ 1s stability and possesses an ultra-stable laser system, all the relevant lasers for creating, trapping and manipulating ultra-cold Sr atoms and its relevant clock energy levels, and the standard equipment of any good AMO lab. High-quality clean rooms for preparation of cavity QED material and vacuum are also available. We currently have an open PhD position! |
